Staff Report Saving Time Through Using the LLR Care Record
Shared Care Records, like the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) Care Record, are freeing up huge amounts of time for health and care staff – creating more time for person-centred care.
A recent survey among social care teams at Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council found adult social care staff were saving an amazing 30 minutes on average each time they logged in, compared to using previous systems. In addition, a survey among staff in community health services at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, found each colleague was saving around nine minutes per login – the average duration for example of a GP appointment.
Shared Care Records are joining up people’s health and care records across the NHS and local authorities. It means information recorded about someone’s health and care such as illnesses, medications and hospital admissions can be accessed by different people who are directly involved in their care. Hospitals, GPs and other health and care workers have always tended to have separate records – the Shared Care Record allows the data from these to be seen in one place.
It is estimated that the staff time being saved by the LLR Care Record based on current levels of use is equivalent to £500,000 a year – and this figure is set to grow further.
The reasons for such savings are based on the enhanced visibility of people’s health and care records, reducing the need for staff to email or phone around for information, supporting more joined up co-ordinated working. They are then able to progress cases sooner and with more confidence, benefitting patients and service users.
Sandra Taylor, LLR Care Record benefits and change manager, who oversaw the survey, said: “We were delighted to hear of the time savings being realised. When the LLR Care Record is fully mature, there will be even greater scope for efficiency improvements. We believe we can achieve much more as the Care Record starts to be used in more services.”
A total of 20,000 staff in LLR health and care providers and East Midlands Ambulance Service have access to the LLR Care Record for direct patient care. It has been rolled out across adult social care in Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council and Rutland County Council, and rollout is progressing in Leicestershire Partnership Trust, University Hospitals of Leicester, Patient Care Locally CIC, GP practices (Forest House, Ibstock, Inclusion Healthcare and Assist), LOROS hospice and community pharmacies.
